Winemaker Xito Olazabal said they picked in about half the normal time to retain freshness in these grapes. It seems to have worked. This fleshes out in the glass as it sits, but it obviously needs some time in the cellar. Come back next year, at the least. There's no rush—it should age well. Probably the best yet of this relatively new bottling, this won't be everyone's first choice—the acidity makes it rather different—but it is pretty fine. Many will adore it. Some won't. It could use a couple of years in the cellar, at the least. Then, it should age well. The expressive fruit is not fully developed by any means, but this is surprisingly easy to drink right now, once past the initial tannic pop. The tannins, in fact, are quite ripe. Not quite as concentrated as the previous vintage, this is nonetheless pretty fine on its own terms. It should age well too, but let's be at least a little conservative. This still has room to grow and improve in the cellar if you can hold it a few years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"producer-note-content\"\u003eIt is probably fair to say that I mostly liked the 2017 reds from Vallado (reviewed in the past; not tasted together for this issue) a bit better than the 2018s. Maybe in the long run they will prove to be the equals or betters of the 2017s.
