It is a Vin Doux Naturel or a sweet wine with a higher alcohol content than "normal" wine, namely 16.5%. Full, ripe Grenache grapes that are harvested in October and ripened partly in cellars and partly outside in full sun. The weather elements make the wine so special.
Banyuls is only bottled after five or six years. The taste hovers between port wine and Madeira and it has retained a charming orange-brown, light color. The bouquet of candied fruit and raisins, which lingers for a long time on the finish, is convincing. The high flavor concentration, the wood maturation and the high alcohol content are reminiscent of mature port wine.
