grape varieties/vinification
Saintayme is a St. Emilion made from 100% Merlot and comes from a 9 hectare terroir. Low yields (45 hl/ha) are deliberately used and the proportion of new oak barrels is 30% to guarantee fruitiness. The chateau belongs to the Durantou family and it was father Denis Durantou who improved the quality of each of his chateaux (read also Les Cruzelles and La Chenade in Lalande Pomerol and l'Eglise Clinet and Petite Eglise in Pomerol) until he passed away in May 2020 from an aggressive illness. Currently, daughters Noemi and Constance are continuing their father's life's work and style with flying colors.
tasting note
Very intense purple with a brilliant reflection. Beautiful nose of ripe fruit, freshly picked and hints of toasted bread. Here we have a huge fruit bomb, from start to finish this Saint Emilion is filling in the mouth and deliciously fresh. The fruit is crisp, juicy, deliciously varied and exuberant! The finish is also very nice and tasty and leaves you wanting more!
wine/food
This wine goes perfectly with grilled steak or entrecôte, portobello mushrooms seasoned with herbs and garlic, and mature, soft cheeses.
Parker/Perrotti-Brown (90-92) Points:
The 2020 Saintayme is 100% Merlot, harvested between the 28th and the 30th of September. It has an alcohol of 14.5% and is aged in French oak barrels, 30% new. Deep purple-black colored, it needs a little coaxing to unlock scents of tar, forest floor and aniseed, over a core of baked black plums, blackberry pie and chocolate-covered cherries, plus a touch of dried mint. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with muscular black fruits and loads of earthy accents, framed by firm, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on a lingering minty note. 63,000 bottles are expected to be made.
James Suckling 93 points:
Orange peel and fruit with chocolate. Medium-bodied with round and polished tannins. Very pretty fruit and finesse. So pretty. Drink or hold.
