Monterrei is located in the wine region of Galicia, in the northwest of Spain, on the Portuguese border. The Romans brought wine to the region and the tradition has been increasingly documented over the years by various archaeological finds in this region. Monterrei is divided into two subzones: "Ledeira de Monterrei", the mountain ridges, and "Val de Monterrei", the valley. The climate in Monterrei is very different from the rest of Galicia: the winters are very cold, the summers are warm and dry. The most common white grape varieties in this region are Godello, Treixadura, Dona Blanca and Albarino. The Godello grapes of this Monterrei DO are grown on slate soils at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level. It is a grape variety that was almost unavailable at the end of the last century and is now making a comeback. Aromas of tropical fruits such as peach and melon can be seen on the nose. On the palate you can feel the tropical aromas of tropical fruits and melon again with a note of banana and a mineral finish. Delicious in combination with white asparagus, oysters, sushi, salads and goat cheese.
